Describe The Relationship Between Guitar And Milkman

Guitar’s name is significant as his character is always unable to achieve his goals and he is constantly played by society. Guitar said that his parents told him that when he was younger, he really wanted a guitar from the store so he was thus christened, Guitar. He never got that guitar, which symbolizes his inability to achieve things in life. For example, when Guitar and Milkman saw the white peacock, they both tried to catch it. However, they never did which shows one example of Guitar failing to achieve his goal. He also fails yet again when he and Milkman try to steal Pilate’s “gold.” While they achieve in stealing it, they get caught and arrested by the police and the “gold” they stole was actually a bunch of rocks and human bones. So yet again Guitar failed to get what he wanted. Also, he wants equality for blacks, but he doesn’t get it. By joining the Seven Days he strives to equalize the killings between blacks and whites, but he will never achieve true equality by committing these heinous acts. …show more content…
Society is playing Guitar as he is striving to make things right for black people as he thinks society has forced his hand. This relates to the novel as a whole because essentially every character is a victim of being played by society. They all became who they are due to their individual circumstances and status within the society. This is also what the author intended by writing this book, that society shapes and changes people, so people should strive to make society the best that it can be for everyone’s
