Describe The Evolution Of Sharks

The science field and discipline documented in this article is ichthyology, the study of fish. Sharks fall under the class of Chondrichthyans, while technically fish, sharks are specifically unique as their bodies are not equipped with calcium based bone structures but rather cartilaginous, a flexible connective tissue. Ichthyologist, or specifically shark biologist, study how sharks have evolved from their first appearance in the Silurian era to how they survived the meteor impact up to modern day where they live in the top of the aquatic food chain. Using fossils, scientists are able to paint a picture of what species of sharks existed and how and why they evolved. This is an example of a pure science as information is being gathered and processed from fossils dating millions of years to better understand the evolution of sharks. In modern day over five hundred shark species have been identified, but fossil records show that this number was once in the three thousand. …show more content…
From this point I lived nothing but sharks for the next few years, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up it was either a shark biologist or a Megalodon.
