Touching the Breeze: Sue Goyette’s Ocean “Objects are the way things appear to a subject – that is with a name, an identity, a gestalt or a stereotypical template. … Things, on the other hand, … [signal] the moment when the Object becomes the Other, when the sardine can look back, when the mute idol speaks, when the subject experiences the object as uncanny and feels the need for what Foucault calls ‘a metaphysics of the object, or, more exactly, a metaphysics of that never objectifiable depth from which objects rise up to our superficial knowledge.’” (W. J. T. Mitchel in Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter (2010), 2)…

When algal blooms are prevalent in bodies of water, specifically bays, they can cause the nitrogen levels in the water to increase. When the nitrogen levels in the water are increased, this can lead to a number of detrimental health effects when consumed. In order to determine whether or not the salinity of the water in Barnegat Bay had an effect on the rate of the nitrogen levels increasing during an algal bloom, ten sample of water were collected and tested by adding the microalgae Nannochloropsis and recording the nitrate and nitrite levels every week. The sample of water varied in salinity, and two samples did not contain the algae to act as a control. The samples were exposed to a temperature of 22°C and were tested over the course of…
It Can Only Get Better From Here On April 14, 2017, 1,503 people died due to one tragic accident and authors made thousands of dollar by writing about it. This accident happened when the Titanic crashed into an iceberg. Deborah Hopkinson was one of those authors. She wrote the book Titanic Voices From the Disaster, but it wasn’t very fascinating.…
1.The increase in salinity is the main cause because of the problems of the faraway locations and because of the local cities waste that runoffs causing an accumulation of nutrients leading to salinity and even eutrophication. Which has caused deaths of fish and birds. As well as embryo defects to the fish residents of the Salton Sea. Making the Salton Sea a death trap instead of a safe substitution of the past wetlands. 2.…
Well-discussed Marissa. You are correct that the ocean acidification implies to the fundamental changes in the chemical balance or chemistry of the Earth’s oceans due to the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere caused by burning of fossil fuels (e.g. coal, fuel oil, and natural gas). Ocean acidification is distinct from global climate change; however, the global threats to ecosystems resulting from ocean acidification are theoretically similar as global warming and also, both are caused by carbon dioxide; therefore, several marine biologists have called ocean acidification as “the other CO2 problem” (Doney et al. ,2009; Jurmain p.475). This rapid increase of the CO2 into the atmosphere is being produced by human activities; and…
In the novel Salt To The Sea, the author, Ruta Sepetys develops many themes and ideas. One of these themes is courage. She develops this theme primarily through three main characters. These characters are Joana, Florian, and Emelia. As these characters try to reach safety and freedom, they are faced with many trials that require courage to overcome.…
Saltwater aquariums can be quite exquisite, however, there is much to know before planning on setting up a saltwater aquarium in your home. There are many major factors that need to be taken into consideration before jumping into a long-term commitment with a saltwater aquarium of your own, such as tank size, decorations, and the different filtration systems, the many environmental factors that need to be monitored to guarantee a healthy habitat, the necessary lighting, the nitrogen cycle, and other biological aspects. Creating a saltwater habitat, can be hard work, and costly, however, the reward is worth it. The first thing to think about when creating a saltwater aquarium is the tank.…
The variance is from waterskiing to surfing. Additionally just soaking up the cool water on the beach is popular. Air-conditioning is necessary in some areas. Not going out at all or going to the air-conditioned malls become common. Water is always required in this climate, as hydration needs consideration to keep the cramps away or worse heat stroke.…
If one person’s inaction leads to the death of another, is he guiltier than someone who committed a violent act that results in a person’s death? In August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, Citizen Barlow stole a bucket of nails, but did not come forward when another man was accused. The man subsequently committed suicide due to the false accusation and the significance of being labeled a thief. Another character, Caesar Wilts, shoots and kills a man who was suspected of committing a crime. While both men’s actions resulted in the death of another; who, if either, is guiltier than the other?…

Increased ocean acidification isn’t the only thing affecting the ocean, but it is very problematic because it erodes aragonite which is a mineral of calcium carbonate. In other words it kills corals and causes the hard exoskeleton to erode. Action needs to be taken to ensure the survival of corals and the creatures that rely on coral reefs to survive. Coral reefs are sources of food for millions of people, but also are sources of medicines. As coral reefs disappear so do the organisms that are mutualistic to it.…
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean about 2,400 miles southwest of the Continental United States, Hawaii is the state that is not part of the North American continent. Composed of many islands, cover about 6,459 square miles, Hawaii is ranked as the 47th largest of the 50 states of America. It’s also known as one of the most famous tourist place of the U.S. There are total of eight main islands: Hawaii, Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Covered by the total area of 4,038 square miles, Hawaii is the largest habitable main island.…
The deep ocean is considered an extreme environment because of the low temperatures, high pressures, lack of oxygen and no sunlight. These conditions have caused the organisms which live there to evolve, often through unusual and unique adaptations, so they can live, reproduce, and thrive. An extreme environment is a place where humans normally do not live or could die there. There are organisms caused extremophiles that live there and are so well-adapted that they readily grow and multiply in order to survive. An example of an extremophile which lives in the deep ocean is the Anglerfish.…
