District Performance Event 3rd Quarter Once a thief, not always a thief! Jimmy Valentine went to prison for breaking into safes. He stayed there longer than he thought. Did he change? Jimmy Valentine was a social person before he went to prison. As O. Henry stated, “When a man with as many friends on the outside as Jimmy Valentine had is received in the “stir” it is hardly worth while to cut his hair.” Jimmy was also friendly with the Warden, and he was able to make the Warden laugh. Will he be able to live a straight life after prison? Jimmy Valentine is indeed a changed person because he went to Arkansas Bank and fell in love with a woman named Annabel, he impressed Annabel and made her fall in love with him, he bought a suit and dress for Annabel to get married and have a new life, and he was also willing to turn himself in. …show more content…
When Jimmy first saw Annabel he, “Looked into her eyes, forgot what he was, and became another man.” This supports the point that Jimmy is beginning to change. He looked into her eyes and became a new man. Jimmy was able to have the wish of his heart. “He met Miss Annabel Adams and became more and more captivated by her charms.” This shows that Jimmy is falling in love with Miss Annabel. He was thinking less about stealing and more about Annabel. In a letter Jimmy wrote to his old friend Billy in St. Louis, he stated, “I’m making an honest living, and I’m going to marry the finest girl on Earth two weeks from now.” Jimmy showed that not only was he falling in love, he was making an honest living. Jimmy Valentine changed into a new man when he changed the way he looked, didn’t steal, and was happy to be with
