Ever since I turned 6, my dad ensured me that Stanford University boasted the best business school in the country. Since I enjoyed math, it seemed natural that I would excel at business as well. So I decided that I would attend the school and study business, so that I could make a lot of money and buy a lot of houses. Ignatius had spent much of his faith-life copying what others Saints had done to please the Lord, believing that this was the best way to praise Him (Olin 30). In a similar way, I believed studying and attending Stanford brought people success, so I decided I would do the same. I grew up and achieved perfect GPAs, so I could attend Stanford University and receive the notoriety associated with the institution. I cared little about educational opportunities I would explore there; what interested me was the ability to supersede my classmates and prove that I was smarter. I shared …show more content…
I knew everything about them and I our lives were relatively similar. My Stanford friends were similar to me in the way that they valued education, enjoyed playing sports, and loved a quality game of Mafia. They, however, lived around the world and had varying opinions, perspectives, and values. Leon Kass believed “difference in opinion may be the beginning of thoughtfulness (Kass 93).” I believe my new friends’ differences in opinion revealed not only opportunities and ideas to process, but traits of my personality I never knew about. I discovered that not only was I curious about how my friends lived in New York and Spain, but how American food disgusted international students and various political issues I’d never been exposed to. I became inspired by a boy who knew four languages and wondered how this affected his understanding and analysis of the world. Once I better understood their culture, I could communicate fully, which lead to inside jokes, hilarious memories, and an overall stronger
