I am an immigrant and I am from Addis Ababa, one of the most beautiful cities in East Africa. Being born and raised in the capital city of Ethiopia for the first two-and-a-half years of my life, I was able to build my life’s foundation in my mother country and create the memories, though they were few, with the people that have influenced me the most, my family. But as we stepped out from the airport in Newark, New Jersey, I remember seeing the colors red, yellow and green blur before my eyes as stop lights switched lights and cars roared past us. People were hurrying to get to their next destination and this, apparently, was the typical hustle and bustle of the city.

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

When I was asked to be the football team manager at my school, I did not know what my duties would be. My job did not have many clear roles, so I created a more contributing manager role. I took a CPR/first-aid training course, researched football-related injuries, and learned to wrap ankles, wrists, knees, etc. I was at practices 3 times a week and at the games. I provided hydration, recorded player info, kept track of gear, aided in pre-game preparation, provided first-aid care, and arranged team meals.…

My ancestors were brought to this country against their will by different groups of individuals. During earlier times in history there were not necessarily conditions in Ghana itself that caused for my ancestors to migrate to the United States. What brought them over here was the forceful migration at the hands of people from other countries. Pertaining to the voluntary conditions, my people came to this country because America is considered the ‘Land of Opportunity.’ Being in this country means a better life for one and their family.…

When I was a child, my parents encouraged me to always be as loving and caring as I could be, not for personal gain, but to be benevolent to the people around me. The aroma of uncertainty surrounded the paramedics in the helicopter. The twenty-minute ride felt like a lifetime and in that lifetime it had me wondering about how this happened. How could I let this happen? It all started one weekend when I went camping for three days with my best friends, Michael and Carrie. Our youth group took us on a trip so we could strengthen our friendships and connect with new friends.…

America, the land of “New Beginnings and Opportunities” is the world’s melting pot for a growing enormous amount of people. “Each day, over a million people from around the globe seek to enter the U.S. through one of about 317 designated [ports-of-entry]” (TRACImmigration Report). The day started off early, with a crisp breeze touching my pure, uncovered skin. I detected a hint of warmth that wisped around and hugged me tightly as the sun twirled higher into the cloudless sky. I was meeting up with a couple of friends to explore the seaside. Meredith, Ashley and I were so thrilled to finally go on one last enormous adventure together. We were in the spring break of our senior year and were all heading straight to our colleges when summer started to settle into our new homes.…

“Wow,” was all I said when I saw my friends I haven’t seen all summer standing at my door. I practically hung out with them every day until my hectic summer schedule came in, so it felt like I haven’t seen them in forever, even when it was only about 2 months. It’s funny how you would think summer is the time of relaxation and hanging out with friends everyday. As for me, I stayed a busy bee, and did many activities to pursue my dream of becoming a triple threat, and getting my name known. One day, I wasn’t doing anything in all of the weeks I’ve been so busy, so it was a bit odd when my mom kept on nagging me to get dressed and ready for the day.…
