My entire life did a complete backflip the moment we landed. At age three, I was already accustomed to the laughter of children as they played soccer on the dirt roads in the neighborhood, the hum of the elderly people chattering away while they sat drinking their coffee on the front porch and my babysitter doing her best to feed me a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. But as we stepped out from the airport in Newark, New Jersey, I remember seeing the colors red, yellow and green blur before my eyes as stop lights switched lights and cars roared past us.
