Describe John Mayer

Music always helps me escape any of my problems, no matter how big or small. I enjoy listening to music whenever I am doing something, whether it is studying, in the car or cleaning my room. I listen to all genres of music; some of the music I listen to does not have any words, only sounds and melodies, and other styles of music include various beats, themes and even languages. When I came across the song, “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer, it really captured my heart in a way like no other song. This song perfectly described my first love eight years ago. I was going through heartbreak, but listening to this song actually made me feel better and helped me move on. John Mayer is my favorite musician and artist. I love all of his …show more content…
The first line of the song (“It’s not a silly little moment/It’s not the storm before the calm.”) is introducing the theme of the song and the couple is having trouble. The relationship will not get any better because there has been too many storms in the relationship for them to move past it. The line (“My dear, we’re slow dancing in a burning room.”) can be interpreted that the fire in their relationship will burn out soon, but only one person wants to accept the fact the relationship has to end soon. The lyrics often use repeating phrases like "it’s not" and "go cry about it". I like the use of repetition as it emphasizes the theme and gives it more meaning. This is an excellent technique when trying to make the listener feel a certain emotion or draw them in. John Mayer writes the lyrics stating the couples are slow dancing in a burning room so the audience have a good visual effect and see the pain the couple is going through. Symbolism is a key factor in this song because that is what the theme is based off. Lastly, when the song is ending with the repetition of the lines (“Don’t you think by we out to oughta know by now?/ Don’t you think we shoulda learned somehow?”) The ending keeps repetition with the lines because John Mayer is trying to tell the audience the couple known for a while the relationship is going to end but they should’ve been smarter and ended sooner than later.

“We’re told these days that the hottest and fastest wire into memory is our sense of smell, but music must run a close second. Some songs carry us into a certain mood, some to a general region of our past lives, and some to a very particular moment and situation in time,” states Stephen Corey in A Voice for the Lonely. I cannot think of a time in my life where music hasn’t been there because I use music in times of trouble and in times of joy. It is in the background of every memory I have.…

As stated in the playbill, The Last Five Years is “a show about a relationship, about a marriage…it’s told from two angles. From the man’s point of view, it starts at the first meeting and ends in the present…from the woman’s point of view, it starts in the present and works back to the first meeting.” (citation). The cast was made up of college students Caroline Stuart (Cathy), who produced the play as a part of her senior study, and Austin Loo (Jamie).…

It shows that marriage can be corrupt and that cheating will cause a lot of person to your “significant other.” This song really is for anyone that has experienced or is going through a marriage or even just a relationship finding out that their significant other is cheating. Sam Smith must’ve gone through something very similar to depict this picture into this song. The pathos in this song is very strong.…
