Describe An Event That Changed Your Course

I’ve never been afraid of jumping into new jobs or living situations, but I didn’t anticipate having such a radical lifestyle change in my late 20’s. A few years ago, I was running a live action role playing company, singing and playing key board for a traveling gothic-industrial band, and modeling for a punk-rock talent agency called Candy Scandals. During this same time, my live action role playing company lost about 50% of its customer base. Due to the housing market crash and a slump in the economy, many customers could no longer afford hobbies, and were forced to move or work multiple jobs to stay in the area. I had no choice but to foreclose on my house. Along with years of mortgage payments and taxes, I lost the $30,000 I

I was hired as a security officer, which gave me the idea to start a career in law enforcement. I devoted over a year to the application process. I applied for 14 perspective police departments, and took full days off work to travel for interviews. I took written, physical, psychological, and poly graph tests, and filled out thousands of pages for applications and back ground checks. The process was arduous. I finally made it into the last stage of hiring for Virginia State Troopers. I had an academy entrance essay due by June 23rd. The photo copied calendar I was sent home with was distorted and appeared to read, “June 28th”. When I realized on the 28th that the date may have been misread, it was too late. I had been dropped as a recruit for missing the deadline and was marked un-eligible for Virginia State

Until I joined the military, which probably wasn’t my easiest decision.…

Last spring, I found myself holed up in my mother’s guest room, 28 years old and facing unemployment yet again. Since I graduated from Hampton University in 2011, I’ve bounced from short-term job to internship to short-term job and back again. I worked as a receptionist at a Brazilian waxing boutique, a nanny, a caterer and a video production assistant. I did a stint as a “creamologist” at a nitrogen ice cream shop in Los Angeles and cut fudge at Dylan’s Candy Bar in New York. A few years ago, I went back to school for a master’s in journalism, but even after earning a Georgetown degree, I couldn’t escape the world of odd jobs.…

He and my mother were incompatible, resulting in his desertion. I suffered the pain of his absence at the tender age of twelve. Although I still see him frequently, my father moving out shook me to my core.…

In everyone’s life there is one or two significant events that change them. In August of 2015 I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for ten days with my church on a missionary trip. The experience of being exposed to a culture outside my own showed me how diverse, yet similar people can be. Being able to first-handedly be apart of a different culture brought to life the fact that humans are basically the same anywhere you go and are interwoven by the same values and interests. Being able to easily build relationships with people who did not even speak the same language as me impacted me greatly, showing me that I have common interests with people on the other side of the hemisphere.…

My Big Move I have lived most of my life in the city. At that time, I lived in an apartment in Newark, Ohio. I had been in three serious relationships in the past, none of which worked out for whatever the reason.…

People sooner or later realize that the choices they make could possibly affect them later in life. We notice that as we grow older we are then faced with the most difficult decisions. I had to make a choice when it came to deciding to play basketball or focusing on my studies in order to graduate. Although I was in a tough situation I didn’t want to think that the only solution was to quit something I had a passion for. Sometimes it’s difficult knowing what to do, but you are forced to pick between the things that interest you the most.…

I remember the first time I saw Mt. Rainier. I was fifteen years old and had spend the year before working several jobs after school to fund this trip and I was now at its feet. It was bigger and badder than I’d ever imagined and I was scared. I realized I was intimidated enough that if I continued to dwell on it, I would quit. Mountains are funny; you may know you 're ready to climb them, but the close quarters combat you do with your mental demons the night before can be overpowering enough to cause anyone to desert their post.…
