In the first meditation of Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes sets out to determine what is undeniably true by first trying to find reasons to doubt many of the facts his opinions are based off of. The first base assumption that he tackles is the reliability of his senses. He finds that his senses could deceive him in the appearances of nearby objects, thus making him seem like he is either insane or hallucinating. He does not believe that he is insane or hallucinating, and goes on to say that even so, his senses still can deceive him when he is dreaming.
