Derf Dahmer Hardships

As a young man in high school everyone could tell Jeffery Dahmer was different. Looked on as an outcast, Jeff felt he was out of place in this world. His parents were not there for him, Jeff had no one there for him and that ultimately led him to become the serial killer he was. In Derf Backderfs spellbinding Graphic Novel My Friend Dahmer, a story about Dahmer’s dark adolescent life, taught me to be sensitive to someone’s home-life, be there for people, and to stay positive and strong.

No one was there for Jeff, not even his own family. Jeff also did not have any close friends to talk to about the hardships he was going through, Backderf explains, “There was no one he could turn to for help. It was his nightmare alone” (81). Dahmer had no friends to talk about his problems. His “friends” were intimidated by Dahmer and could not develop a close relationship with him. All of his problems and anger was bottled up inside. It is not healthy to be an introvert and never open up to anyone and that was Dahmer’s problem that caused him to spiral out of control. This taught me to always be there for people who seem to be struggling. You never know what someone is going through. Dahmer turned to alcohol to numb the pain that was building up inside of him, Backderf states, ”Dahmer wasn’t after a buzz. He was making himself…numb (82). Dahmer gave up on having a normal life and could not control his dark thoughts because he became dependent on alcohol. He thought that alcohol would help but it wound up making it worse. Dahmer let the struggles he was facing get the better of him and since he had no one to open up too he turned to alcohol. Alcohol was a negative influence on his life that led him to act on his dark thoughts because it clouded his sense or right and wrong. This taught me to be positive and never let bad situations get the best of me. Staying positive is key in life. If you let every bad thing that happens get the better of you, you will never be happy.
