Derek's Case Study

Derek is a 10 year old, third grade student, who will be entering the fourth grade next school year. Derek’s results from standardized test indicate that he has above average general intelligence and is reading on a second grade reading level. Derek is able to apply a phonetic decoding strategy when attempting to decode words. Derek writes with a cursive writing style, typical of students his age.
According to recent achievement testing, Derek has a below average scores for word identification, word attack, and word comprehension. Derek struggles with identifying and blending beginning, middle, and ending sounds for words. Derek’s word attack skills are below average, resulting in Derek making incorrect substitutions for words and nonsense

Derek currently takes the medication Seldane for allergies. Derek’s parents report that his favorite subjects are math and science, and that he enjoys participating in a variety of sports. Derek’s family also stated the he does well managing his personal care and interacts well with others. Derek’s mother and father express concerns for Derek’s attention and hyperactivity, and indicate issues with Derek displaying an argumentative attitude and issues with completing homework. Derek’s parents expressed feelings that Derek receive a program with intensive, individualized instruction to meet his academic needs and deficits and are supportive of him attending a special education class for students with learning disabilities.

Skill Area: Reading
Annual Goal: Derek will increase reading readiness skills in the area(s) of decoding to with 80% accuracy rate, as measured by observation and data collection.
Short Term Objective: Given a set of words, Derek will read beginning word digraphs (i.e. cl, sh, ch,), without assistance, with an 80% accuracy rate.
Short Term Objective: Given a set of words, Derek will blend the correct beginning and middle sounds together, without assistance, with an 80% accuracy

    During the assessment when my student came across a word he didn’t know, he’d often times skip it or mumble passed it. I felt like if gaining his confidence and teaching him strategies he would become a more confident oral fluent reader.
