Derek Jeter: Most Famous Baseball Player

Derek Jeter is known as one of the greatest major league baseball players ever to step on the field. He is a role model on and off the field, therefore he should be a huge candidate for person of the year. Derek Jeter was born June 26, 1974 in a small town named Pequannock, New Jersey where he soon moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan at 4 years old. He studied at Kalamazoo Central High School and was selected for the baseball and basketball teams. In his junior year, he had a batting average of .508 and in his sophomore year, he had an average of .557. By the time he was in his senior year, he had a batting average of .508. Ever since he was a young boy he has always wanted to make a difference in this world through helping others that aren’t as fortunate as he was. In 1996 the Turn 2 foundation was established to help children and teenagers avoid drug and alcohol addiction, and to reward those who show high academic achievement and adopt healthier lifestyles. The name "Turn 2" is symbolic of the dramatic double play made by infielders during a game. Derek Jeter quotes, “Grow safely and successfully into adulthood and become the leaders of tomorrow.” Since the start of this organization they have raised over 16 million dollars. Ever since he was a young boy he was a leader on all his sports teams, his teammates looked at him to carry the teams he played on. In 2003 Derek Jeter was named the official club leader or captain of the New York Yankees and he held this position for the rest of his career. This position he was given shows huge leadership. If the team needed a player Derek would be there number one option. One of Jeter’s organizations is the Jeter’s Leaders. The Jeter's Leaders is a youth leadership, social change program named by the captain of the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter, and funded by his Turn 2 Foundation. The program is designed to promote healthy lifestyles, academic achievement, and social change activism among high school students. Throughout the year, members of the Jeter's Leaders are involved in projects that offer opportunities for them to learn more about themselves and their community. The Leaders are expected to model positive behavior and deliver a message to their friends focusing on staying in school, remaining drug and alcohol free and giving back to the community.
