Deputy Field: Case Study

Improved Essays
On Monday, October 26 in Columbia, South Carolina a confrontation between an officer and a high school student occurred. Deputy Ben Fields, the resource officer at Spring Valley High School, was called to a classroom to escort a student out due to her refusal to put away a cell phone. The student refused to leave the classroom upon the officer’s request so the officer flipped the student backwards in her desk and threw her across the floor. Several of the by standing students recorded videos of the incident, which provided evidence that was later reviewed and aided in determining the outcome of this altercation. Deputy Fields is a white male adult while the student is a teenage black female, which begs the question- is this a race issue? …show more content…
After reading the information about why the officer was called and then watching the video of how the officer mishandled the young lady, it is quite disturbing to watch as the officer threw her to the floor like an animal. The first image that came to mind upon watching the video was that of a cowboy roping a calf. This type of inhumane treatment is unacceptable and in my opinion the officer should not only be terminated but he should also be facing charges. The first question I would ask this officer is- is this how you would treat your teenage daughter if she did not want to give you her cell phone? Followed by- what would you do if you saw this video of a cop doing this to your family? It is unacceptable. Officers should be held to a higher standard because they are trusted to protect the general public. If they cannot uphold this essential part of being an officer then, in my opinion, they should find another career. There is absolutely no reason that a student should go home with arm, neck, and back injuries as a result of an altercation with a police officer. The video shows that the officer hardly tried using verbal commands as they are apparently trained to do. It is quite disappointing that we still live in a country where discrimination exists and police crimes occur as frequently as they

Dr. Imani Perry being arrested over a parking tickets was ridiculous. but since it is Princeton’s police department policy officers technically had the right to arrest her. Handcuffing people to tables when they have been taken into custody is supposed to happen. Dr. Perry should not have had to go through the humiliation of being arrested over parking tickets but a police departments’ policy is something officers must follow. So if anything is wrong it is people being able to be arrested over parking tickets.…

Ride Along During and after my experience, I realized how similar and accurate the material learned in class was to what police officer experience in a typical day. I was able to participate in the Fullerton police ride along program, on April 8th from 10am-6pm, under Officer Lopez’s shift. Before arriving for the scheduled ride along, one needs to submit a waiver form. The form was not available online or the community service bureau not opened 24 hours, this created a delay in setting up the ride along.…

It really shows the reality of this world and that police officers are human as well. We all contain our own kind of flaws where none of us are perfect. As for Officer Damico and Pantaleo, who eventually killed Eric, they did not think about the ramification of performing such an act. One plausible cause for their actions may be that Eric Garner is…

“The beating of Rodney King became the lead story for several days on the major networks as well, the most explicit and shocking news footage of police brutality ever to be seen on television” (Skolnick and Fyfe 3). Excessive force ends with a major injury, fracture or in extreme cases death. Rodney King was one of the cases that opened the public eyes to this others brutality. There was no way to hide the brutality as it was an unjustified beating of one person versus many. There are many cases where police officers shoot because they suspect the person had a gun when they reached for an unidentified object.…

“Black Lives Matter” Movement & Police Brutality As much as the subjects of “Black Lives Matter” and police brutality are getting stale and cliché, unfortunately it is still an issue that will not be corrected by hushed complaints and sweeping under the rug. However, this problem is not brand new; it has only escalated. Racial discrimination began in the times of slavery and has been an issue since—well forever. The discrimination has been toughest on minorities—like the African-American community. Along with the racial discrimination from society itself, some police and law enforcement figures have often abused their power and taken advantage of their place in the majority race.…

Police officers assigned to schools are called SROs, School Resource Officers. The 2013 Congressional Research Service report says SROs enforce laws on campus and act as a “problem-solver and liaison” to prevent local crime and teach students to avoid becoming crime victims (Botelho and Ellis ). Recently there has been controversy over whether it is appropriate for SROs to be in the classroom setting. SROs are needed in schools to protect students and make schools a safe place.…

Being a police officer comes with great responsibilities. They are expected to maintain law and order, protect the lives of citizens, reduce fear of crime and most importantly prevent crime. But in the past few years, it seems as if they’re the ones putting fellow citizens in fear. Police brutality isn’t a topic you frequently hear about, but the times we do it’s nothing short of a serious problem. I’m not sure if it’s to do with race or just about the law enforcement agencies believing they can abuse the power that is a privilege to them.…
