Depression, the Silent Killer
• 121 million people around the world suffer with depression. Depression can make a person feel like they are useless or hopeless. A person might even feel emotionless or numb. However; a person can overcome depression with the right help and a good support team, a person can get their life back on track again. There are many signs or signals you can look for to see if a person is depressed or not. Many of the common signs are:
- Cannot sleep or you sleep too much.
- Cannot concentrate or things that were easy before are now more difficult.
- Might feel hopeless and helpless.
- Cannot stop thinking negatively.
- Might have loss in appetite or an increase in eating.
- Might be more irritable or more aggressive

Some people are just born depressed. They have a chemical imbalance in their brain when a person is low on serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemical break down in the brain and are what helps make a person happy. When a person is low on these it is harder for someone to be happy. Another reason why a person may be depressed is if something traumatizing has happened to them in the past or the future. A stressful job could also be a cause for depression. A person may be financially struggling. A loss of a love one or having relation problems. A person may also be depressed if they are being bullied at work or school. If a person is always being put down or treated bad he or she is more likely to become depressed or struggle with having self-confidence. One of the most common ways is through series of medicines. Though many people may feel like medicines do not help. This is because depression medicine affects everyone differently. The medicine changes chemicals in the human brain, sometimes it changes them and sometimes it does not. There are thousands of depression medicines. For some people it takes many years to find the right combination of medicines that actually help with depression. With depression medicine it is a swing or miss sort of deal. Another way to help someone with depression is to go to counseling. Many people hold their feeling in. This is very unhealthy. Holding your feelings in can cause headaches, stomach pains, lack of eating, over eating, or becoming depressed. When he or she talking about their problems they feel as if a weight has been lifted off of them. Talking out the problems also helps a person find the main cause of the depression. Also, it might help a person find “triggers” or things that cause a person to feel or think the way he or she does. Additional to talking about their problems, many people find writing their feelings down in a journal helps them with depression. If a person is too uncomfortable to talk to someone about their problems they might feel better writing out what is bothering them. Drawing is another good way to express ones
