Depression What exactly is depression? Depression is “a mood disorder characterized by sadness; a feeling of guilt; changes in sleep, appetite, and motor behavior; and sometimes thoughts of suicide.” (Davis, Palladino, Christopherson. 2013). In this paper, there will be the discussion of symptoms, individual affects, prevalence rates, treatments, and outcomes of depression. In the closing of this paper there will be a brief description of my own opinions of depression.
Symptoms There are four main symptoms of depression, which are emotional, cognitive, motivational, somatic and behavioral (Davis, et al.). Examples of emotional symptoms are episodes of crying, loss of temper, jumpiness, and being sad. Cognitive means that someone is being …show more content…
Children tend to have headaches, stomachaches, and have temper tantrums (Davis, et al.) Adults can have the symptoms of loss of appetite and become sad compared to adolescents, who tend to get angry. (Davis, et al.) All ages can experience any symptoms varying from one of the symptoms or all the symptoms.
Individual Affects
The biggest effect depression has on an individual is suicide. Suicide is the most severe outcome of depression and is the attempt for someone to kill themselves. “In 2010, someone in the United States committed suicide every 14 minutes (there were 37,793 suicides in 2010); 1.5% of all deaths are suicides” (Murphy, Xu, & Kochanek, 2012). Most suicides are committed my white males. It is more common to see a male commit suicide compared to woman, which is applied to all races (Davis, et al.). Another dramatic outcome of depression is cutting. Cutting is when someone harms themselves by cutting into their skin, which occurs mostly to younger people. Cutting happens because some wants to escape their depression. Cutting is an action that an individual most face with themselves. Support groups is an assembly of people, including an administrator, who struggle with the same experiences and attempt to encourage and help the individuals attending (Martin and Guidos, 2000). An anti-depressant is medication for people who are depressed. Anti-depressants can be prescribed to any age group that has a severe case of depression. Psychotherapy is a “method for the treatment of mental disorders and physiological problems” (Martin and Guidos, 2000). Psychotherapy can be done by psychoanalysis, client- centered therapy, family therapy, and group therapy (Martin and Guidos,
