Human civilization has alway viewed depression as a morbid, dreadful illness that harbored by the meek and powerless; it’s stigmatized and disregarded as a case of the blues. This could be the cause of those with depression isolating themselves, and their unwillingness to receive proper treatment. Personally, I have suffered from depression for many years, and still do. As I was receiving treatment my goal was always to get rid of my depression.When days of depression turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, and months turned into years, I became frustrated. My depression never went away. I used to think that being depressed is an abnormal bad thing that a person should get rid of. Instead, I started to embrace the idea that maybe depression is like all my other emotions and it’s okay to experience it. Instead of rejecting depression I found a place for it internally, and sometimes I even let myself indulge in it. Jonathan Rottenberg questioned the approach to depression in his article “An Evolved View of Depression” In it he states “Epidemiological research demonstrates that nearly all episodes of depression have an endpoint, and that nearly half of all people who have a bout with depression never have another. We carry mood vulnerabilities, but also a natural resilience (Rottenberg).” There are outreach programs out there for individuals with depression, but it will be unsuccessful overall because we have this radical idea that depression is a deficiency of human evolution. This misunderstood theoretical idea has been repeated too many times, and in order to see any progress in this prevailing inflammation we need to change our direction. I hope to see a day where individuals with depression can adapt and even embrace this luminous emotion. A day where this “illness” takes no more lives. Where
