This theory “is based on the idea that behaviors are deviant only when society labels them as deviant. As such, conforming members of society, who interpret certain behaviors as deviant and then attach this label to individuals, determine the distinction between deviance and non-deviance.” (Crossman) a person that is a part of a violent relationship may label themselves as worthless, and selfish and that’s when depression comes into the picture. The person may reject themselves from society because they feel that they deserve the punishment and feel that they still need to stay with the person. Because of this issue, the person labels themselves harder than another person at certain circumstances. A person that has gone through domestic violence and suffering with depression, may be different in the social aspect. This person may act completely different to hide her/his true feelings and what the person is going through rather than being honest and showing that they are in pain. Because of the scientific sociology method, there can be many methodologies that can be used such as the survey test to determine how a partner is feeling during or after being a part of a violent relationship. In this survey, we can ask yes or no questions specifically towards how they feel, and what they did to end the relationship or figure out what they are thinking when they are still in the relationship. An interview with a woman/man who was or still is in a D.V relationship can greatly determine what goes through one’s mind and how they feel about the situation they are in. Getting multiple amounts of these interviews and documenting them in the end, will be a good way to determine the similarities of what these women are feeling to the differences from how they handled the situation to how they left. There are negatives to both of these methods though. For one, human behavior changes daily whether it includes being a part of a violent relationship, and having depression or not.
