Styron illustrates after reading The Myth of Sisyphus, “I was puzzled throughout the essay, since despite the author’s persuasive logic and eloquence there was a lot that eluded me, and I always came back to grapple vainly with the initial hypothesis, unable to deal with the premise that anyone should come close to wishing to kill himself in the first place” (Styron 23). This thought came to Styron before he had depression. He could not imagine a mental illness being so strong that it could lead someone to self destruction. When a person is feeling depressed the pain they feel can be so overwhelming that they can barley bear it and there is no set date in the future when the distress will end so they feel the only option is to commit suicide. Society as a whole look down at people that commit suicide because it hurts others and is a selfish act. This should not be the case because suicide is a disease that is just as serious as a cancer. Also what leads up to suicide is the fact that people do not want to admit that they are depressed and suicidal and therefore cannot get the help to overcome the problem and get the education that it is not a permanent state and they can get better. Because your mind is the world and when that is gone you have nothing left but your physical being It takes away in a bit of individual’s sane rational mind. The feelings of melancholy engulf one 's mind. The depressive thoughts take all of the minds power and the victim cannot function properly. William points out writer’s area susceptible to suicide, “Artistic types are particularly vulnerable to the disorder-which, in its graver, clinical manifestation takes upward of twenty percent of its victims by the way of suicide” (Styron35). Manny great poets and writers especially suffer from depression because a healthy mind is what they survive on and make them happy. When a writer has a depressed mind their inability to think properly enables them to write which their passion. Because a clear mind is more important to writers than the average person with depression it has a more detrimental effect on them. Depression has no predetermined end like the healing of a broken bone. The mind can be clotted four months or even years. This makes the sufferer feel even more hopeless about their situation. The uncertainty can bring the depression in a downward spiral and cause suicidal thoughts to end the
