It is the dependent variable because in this case, depression is dependent on the number of years has served in the military or if they have served at all. The independent variable is the variable that is not dependent on another. In this case, having depression is not a determining factor for serving in the military. The variable name for depression is ‘DEPRESS’ and the variable name for the number of years in the military is ‘VETYEARS.’ The label for ‘DEPRESSION’ says that participants have stated that they have depression. The label for ‘VETYEARS’ is the years in the armed forces.
