Depression is becoming a very common mental illness within different communities. Depression negatively impacts the brain, and affects how one feels, acts, and thinks. Studies show that lesbians are six times more likely to undergo depression than heterosexual individuals. Those of the lesbian community are more likely to experience depression for various reasons such as harassment, rejection, and judgment. Depression is growing constantly, especially within woman who classify themselves to be a part of the homosexual community.
Statement of the Problem
Throughout doing this research study I have found out that this study needs to be conducted due to it becoming a growing issue within society, but also in the social work profession. I will be researching and finding my answers and data through numerical data, by using paper surveys to individuals of the lesbian population, and individuals of the straight population. Part of my research will be a qualitative study where I observe the individuals of the lesbian population to see if I see any signs of depression before handing out the survey. While conducting this research study, my aim and goal is to find out that lesbians are more known for depression than straight woman. The strengths of this methodology is that I could surly find out the results in the differences in lesbian depression and straight woman depression. The weaknesses might be that some individuals might not admit the truth about ever being depressed on the survey.
