According to an article on depression by Anita Skinner, “depression is a common health disorder that impairs normal functioning, causes distress and has an adverse effect on an individual’s quality of life” (Skinner 1). Just by the definition it is easy to tell that depression can have a huge effect on someone’s life. Anxiety and panic are common components of severe depression, often predisposing an individual to suicide. Depression can be classified as mild, moderate or severe (Scot 61). Anxiety and depression tend to link together, when people have depression normally anxiety is something they have or experience as well. It can make people feel even worse about themselves and lose a lot of their self-confidence or have major break downs depending on the severity. Exercise is a great way to reduce the levels of depression, it is encouraged to enhance mood and sleep quality. Insomnia is another factor that can exacerbate depression, so it is important patients are protected from unnecessary disturbance at night. Observations should be considered a positive intervention ensuring those at risk of suicide or who have severe depression (Anita 1). Observing a person is very important because you want to make sure they are going to aright and won’t harm themselves. It can be difficult to live with someone who has the condition. Helping them give the necessary support and encouragement. (Anita 1). Treatment is based on the severity of the condition. For example, mild depression can be treated by providing patients with an opportunity to talk, giving them information about depression, and maintaining regular contact with them. The best thing is giving them the opportunity to talk, be heard, and discuss any concerns. For moderate to severe depression, treatment may include the prescription of antidepressants or a course of talking therapy such as cognitive behavior therapy (scot 61).
