Well now it's time to take a closer look at it and its effects dealing with stereotypes.
As a young woman in today's society it is hard to meet the "status quo" of what we need to think or look like. Today's expectations of women are ridiculous in my honest opinion. Over eighty percent of women in the United States are dissatisfied with their appearance (Ross). In today’s society women are constantly being told that they have to fit the standards of the ideal woman in order to be considered beautiful. Some of these standards include having light eyes, blonde hair, perfect teeth, flawless, tan skin, long legs, and a well-proportioned figure and are often times impossible for most women in the U.S. to attain (Sherrow). In magazines aimed at the general population, including Sports Illustrated and Vanity Fair, women are oversexualized with provocative slogans, little to no clothing, and electronically edited photos. This creates an apparent distinction between what the media reinforces as the ideal woman and what women really look like. Here, a phenomenon called the feminine beauty ideal arises. The feminine beauty ideal is "the socially constructed notion that physical attractiveness is one of women 's most important assets, and something all women should strive to achieve and maintain." Gender Ideals All women are being infused with sex inferiority as we are all a target to fulfill societal ideals of beauty standards. Women of all ranking ages feel the obligation to satisfy or conform to a simulated beauty ideal. If they do not fulfill their idealization they are becoming filled with self-oppression, inferiority, and the idea that, “nothing less than perfection will do.” Induced with obligation, society oppresses women to desire and assimilate around a singular beauty ideal. They practically shape our society.…

A magazine takes away from a woman's true beauty, which can make a woman insecure about herself and body. Magazine corporations should have no right to photoshop a woman’s picture at all. Photoshopping a photo can lead to many problems and breakdowns. Why wouldn’t you want to show the beauty of a woman that is all natural? Magazines should never alter a woman's image because it is false advertisement, can affect self-esteem, and it also promotes unattainable beauty.…

Many people believe that women are seen as the less equal gender, which is true in some instances. One of those instances is pay. According to Patten, “full-time working women earn 77% of what their male counterparts earn. From a young age everyone in my generation has been influenced by the media and society. Because society and media go hand in hand, their influence has been magnified ten-fold, leaving destruction in its wake. Although there are many horrid things that the media and society have effect on, the most prevalent in my life is the beauty standard, particularly the beauty standard for women.
