The Influence Of Depression

Improved Essays
Depression is one of the worst mental illnesses known in this country. People try to ignore it, shake it off, and pretend like it isn’t even there. The ones who don’t have it, don’t know a clue about how it feels or how to act around someone that has it. If an individual has depression their afraid that it’s who they are and they’re known as “the one that has depression.” That’s so completely wrong because people shouldn’t be labeled like that. They should be judged by the good things they do and shouldn’t be identified as one word who is a part of them. Personalities should be the part that matters. Depression should be taken seriously, but it shouldn’t describe someone as a person.

I’m not very good at making friends because I am shy and have to get comfortable around someone first. A lot of people have told me I can be hard to approach because I have RBF (resting bitch face). To be honest, when I was told this it was quite funny because it’s just my normal face. I definitely am not one at that. Some of my friends came here to SDSU from my high school. The people I hang out with is very few because I only like keeping a few friends close rather than having a bunch of fake ones. The real people I spend my time with is my family. They mean everything to me and sometimes it’s hard to be away from them. In The Naked Roommate, I can relate to Tip 3.5 because it explains how none of us are alone. Everyone is going through the same thing here at SDSU. Whether it’s hard to talk about it or not all of us are here for each other. If I had to choose one picture to describe my mental health, it would be the first one. It shows comfort for someone in need. I relate to it because I care for the people around me, put their needs before mine, and care for them. It has an impact on me because it’s important that everyone has someone to lean on when life gets troubled. This second picture describes my mental health in the future because it represents happiness. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy now. In the future I want to only worry about me and the family I will have. I want to be genuinely happy and help myself the way I help

Famous female author, Joan Didion, wrote “The Santa Ana” to educate readers about the reactions of the LA population to the notorious winds in the area. She writes about how “The winds show us how close to the edge we are” (Didion 47). Every person has a different metaphorical wind that forces him or her to fall off of their own personal cliff, and mine is depression. Depression is a commonly misunderstood mental disorder. Some people even use it as a description or an emotion, for example, “Oh my God, last night I was feeling super depressed,” which downplays the seriousness of the illness.…

Once that label of “depression” is imposed on a person, it is very difficult for this person to escape the box they’ve been put it. It would start to act as a confirmation bias, in which every single feeling of sadness or emptiness is just a result of his or her depression. “Oh, I’m feeling sad right now because I’m a depressed person.” It would make sense that this thought would travel through someone’s head after finding out that they’ve been diagnosed with depression. They would associate every single sad feeling with their…

The author Kay Redfield Jamison eloquently describes what it is truly like living with ; “depression is awful beyond words or sounds or images. It bleeds relationship through suspicion, lack of confidence and self-respect, the inability to enjoy life, to walk or talk or think normally, the exhaustion, the night terrors, the day terrors.” (Doc 1; Jamison 1995) Through this it is crystal clear to see that no one would endure that wretched way of living because they wanted to pretend or live some fantasy. Mental illness is real and it affects millions; by denying the existence of their conditions it not only is disparaging to those with these illnesses, it is disrespectful for the men and women who work trying to make their lives…
