Saving Grace Adkins Analysis

We all find ourselves in a funk every now and again, some let it get so severe that they feel as if there is no recovering from this deep seeded depression. Some take this depression as a sign that they no longer belong and feel at peace with this choice whereas others search for help and in many cases find a saving grace if you will.
In “Saving Grace” we meet Grace, she 's a 17 year old dealing with the hardships of being a teenage girl, as well as being in that transitional stage between high school and college. In the play Mrs. Adkins gives us some emotional background into her childhood and the reasoning behind her ongoing depression. After getting the news that she was not accepted to Ohio state as she had always planned upon being her escape it seems as if her depression has hit an all time high and she no longer feels as if she can deal with the depression she is battling.
We also meet Emma who comes from a wealthy family, has always had a strong base of friends, and seems to have it all together. But, when Emma finds that she was not accepted into UCLA she finds herself in a bit of a funk herself. She discloses to Grace that she recently lost her mother although it is never mentioned how her mother passed away. Although clearly going through her own hardships

But, I wanted to emphasize on the deep rooted depression that Grace felt. Growing up in a difficult life situation that led to the death of her mother and then not getting into the school that had been her “escape root” and start to a new life all left her with a feeling of no return. I wanted to end the story without any more detail or information because it leaves the reader the opportunity to make for their own ending. It can be happy, sad, or simply bizarre.
