Although the term attachment seems straightforward, there are actually different types that exist between a mother and child. In the opinion of Myers & DeWall (2016), attachment is defined as a strong tie between children and their caregiver. This attachment process is so important for the growth of a child because it gives them a foundation and basis to develop. According to Myers & DeWall (2016), secure and insecure attachment are the types that can be observed. With these types come many pros and cons between the child and caregiver. Secure attachment is described as a child feeling comfortable in their caregivers environment (Myers & DeWall 2016). A benefit of this attachment is that the child is accepting and feels secure around their caregiver. Specifically, they are more willing to explore new environments, and are forgiving when their caregiver returns (Myers & DeWall, 2016). Although, this is not the same pattern for insecure attachment and can be observed as the opposite of the previous type. Insecure attachment style is filled with unaccepting feelings toward the caregiver when they leave and children are less likely to explore new environments (Myers & DeWall, 2016). By gaining an understanding of depression during pregnancy, more awareness can be brought upon pregnant mothers and their psychological struggles. In doing so, society can encourage therapy programs to help this cause. One treatment program specifically that was made aware of by Clay (2016), states that mindfulness cognitive therapy such as yoga has be found to reduce depression 50% of the time. This treatment type is just one of the many options for struggling mothers.
