Capote came to Holcomb because he read a small story detailing the crime. He experienced writer's block at the time and then decided that he would write the story in its full length (Plimpton 1966). Two men were discussing the penalty that they deserved, and while one argued that death was the only option because they “killed four people in cold blood” the other argued that hanging both of them was “pretty goddam cold-blooded too” (Capote 306). Whether or not the scene actually occurred, this was one of the many subtle ways Capote infused his opinion into the novel. It reveals that the title of the book is actually referring to the killing of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, whom Capote believed were unjustly killed. Additionally, Capote describes as what he perceived as unfairness in the trial throughout the last section. He references how the lawyers “did not desire to serve”, and how some of the jury members had a personal connection to Mr. Clutter (Capote 257).…

For Dick Hickock, he handles the post murders well and doesn’t bother to see what the police found or what any social media has to say about the loss of the Clutter family. “ Perry baby...you don’t want that hamburger. I’ll take it.” [pg. 89] This quote shows the difference between the two perpetrators and how they handle the crime differently; Perry is worried that the plan will fail and they’ll get caught therefore causing him to lose his appetite, and Dick who is too arrogant to honestly think of anyone else but himself and his hunger. Perry is more cautious about the entire crime even though Dick is constantly assuring him of the fool proof plan, and is hesitant about everything the newspapers say.…

Dick said it was seven miles away, he kept talking to himself saying this ought to be here and that ought to be there-according to the instructions he’d memorized” (Capote, In Cold Blood 266). These examples prove that Capote did his research and actually conducted interviews of the people that were involved to have all the factual evidence needed to produce this novel. The novel also exudes a somber tone as it describes some of the events leading up to the killings. For example, Capote describes how Mrs. Clutter had just found out the great news that her medical condition was physical not mental when he states, “So medical opinion had at least decreed, was not in her head but in her spine- it was physical” (Capote, In Cold Blood 17). This information made the already brutal crime even worse because things were beginning to look up for her and she was eventually going to be able to live the life she wanted when she was killed.…
