As he does so, his life soon begins to depend on the machines in order to live and not be forced to live on life support. “Even if I could. Survive. On some shitty life support system. I don’t want to” (Barry, 257). During the book it talks about how people envy Charles’s machines. They have working limbs but want his technology almost as if it is a fashion. The people are so absorbed in technology that they are willing the replace their working limbs for mechanical limbs. Towards the end of the book, Charles is so intertwined with technology that it begins to control him. For example, Charles was angry with the manager that his leg kicked the manager out of the window. Charles had no control over what his legs did at that point. Another example of this is at the end of the book. Charles was trying to run away with Lola and stomp on the ground so that it would cause a commotion. However, Jason took control of Charles’s leg and controlled him like a “puppet” (Berry, 267). Charles was so involved in technology and making mechanical parts that now he is being used as technology. Charles is even talking like a machine would
