Dependability

dependability means, you can be relied upon to perform duties to the best of your abilities. it means you can be trusted to complete a job. it is the willing and voluntary support of the policies and the orders of the chain of command. dependability also means constantly putting forth your best effort in attempt to achieve the highest standard of performance. being a marine your dependability is tested on a day to day basis. for example, showing up on time for formations or other accountability, as well as making sure the said name marine has the necessities needed to achieve certain tasks. unfortunately, once a marine or any individual shows he is unreliable, he is not trusted until he proves once again he is dependable. once an individual brings attention to one's self, he must go above and beyond his duties to gain the respect of fellow marines. he must take initiative in showing self improvement and maintain the up most

i was more tired than i have ever been on post. blaming no one but myself. it was then i was tested with dependability the most. i was caught sleeping on post and i accepted full responsibilities of my actions. at that moment i realized no only did i let my fellow marines to my left and right down, but i also let myself down. if something were to happen at that split second when i wasn't fully aware of my surroundings, i couldn't imagine trying to tell someones family or wife as to why their significant other or son didn't make it back because i couldn't maintain watching my sectors. further more, in my perspective i believe dependability is one, if not the most important leadership trait because it is the baseline and the first steppingstone in becoming a great leader. if someone can't trust you to do the right thing when no one is looking, you can't be rusted or depended on to lead others when tasked out to do
