Departmental QA Checklist

Improved Essays
The position of the source is crucial for accurate treatment planning and delivery. The patient needs to be examined (through ultrasound, CT imaging, etc.) before treatment planning begins and before each treatment so that the geometry and positioning of the source to the intended target is precise and accurate. Each day before HDR treatment, the radiation therapist must utilize a departmental QA checklist. There are several components to this checklist.
• Visual inspection of transfer tubes~ to make sure that the source will have a clear pathway and will not get stuck or move slowly to the dwell position. The tubes need to be clear of any kinks or obstructions. Also, the tubes should be properly labeled, so that the correct tubes can be easily verified for treatment.
• Test for timer termination ~ make sure the source is retracted when the treatment time is up

One camera on the HDR after loader, another where the source enters/exits the patient and the last one monitoring the “radiation monitor” lights inside the room. It is so important to have audio and visual communication during radiation therapy treatment. Especially in HDR treatments, the treating oncology staff, particularly the doctor needs to be able to monitor the patient at all times and visually sees the source smoothly enter and exit the patient.
• The survey meter needs to be turned on and tested for optimum operation before treatment
• Verification of current activity of radiation source. This is so important because if the calculation of the activity is incorrect, and the patient is treated, then the patient risks being under dosed or overdosed for that treatment due to the miscalculation and incorrect treatment

    • 3 Pages

VDH can provide critical information to healthcare providers, including a fact sheet for managing patients exposed to or contaminated with radiation (Appendix 16) and instructions for collecting and shipping specimens for laboratory testing by urine bioassay (Appendix 17a for distribution outside VDH, Appendix 17b for distribution within VDH). For clinical management and care of patients with significant radiation exposure or contamination (≥ 1000 times background), DRH may refer healthcare providers, through the LHD Director, to REAC/TS. REAC/TS provides 24-hour clinical consultation for the medical management and radiation monitoring of radiation victims. A REAC/TS algorithm for managing radiation victims is presented in Appendix 18. VDH can also provide information to responders about PPE (See Section 2.10).…

When protection the public, patients and the radiation technologists from radiation, shielding is one of the most important factors to consider. However shielding goes beyond just protecting the patient using gonadal shielding. Contractors and hospital staff have three sources of radiation that they must shield. These include scattered radiation from the patient, primary radiation for the x ray beam and leakage radiation from the x ray tube. All x ray tubes have some radiation leakage.…

There are several surgical procedures done today to help improve the lives of people. One of those surgical procedures is a cholangiography. The cholangiography procedure was first performed in 1932, with the intention to demonstrate the biliary duct system, drainage into the duodenum, and any remaining stones in the biliary ducts (Bontrager & Lampignano, 2014). There are different types of cholangiography's including percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC), intraoperative cholangiography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Each of these procedures has the main focus of demonstrating the biliary ducts, but each procedure is done a little differently (MyDr,…

Introduction: The roles of ATP and creatine in muscle contraction The store of ATP in muscle tissue is limited even though it is the immediate source of energy for everything we do including muscle contraction. The cellular ATP needs to be regenerated from ADP quickly in order to keep the contraction going otherwise the vertebrate muscle contraction will use up the present ATP in 1 second. Fortunately, most cell has a high rate of ATP “turnover” which means ATP can be swiftly synthesised from ADP and Pi at the same time as it is broken down.…
