Department Of Justice Case Study

Two of the major issues involving the Department of Justice is terrorism and the changing political environment. The United States has been threatened by other countries and extremist groups. The most recent threat came from the ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) extremists; they started with killing two U.S journalists on video, and have moved to “focusing their attention on regional ambitions and having Western nation followers to conduct deadly attacks at home.” (Lee Ferran, 2015). Another threat came from North Korea. They have warned the U.S. saying they “will meet any aggression by the “gangster-like” U.S. with conventional weapons, nuclear strikes and cyber warfare.” (North Korea Threatens US with 'Final Doom', 2015). There are other threats that have been made by other countries as well, but when we receive them the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense have to work together to protect the American citizens. For example, an unarmed black man, Michael Brown, was shot by a white police officer Darren Wilson. This caused major rioting in Ferguson and a large amount of property damage. The witnesses’ statements were conflicting. Some said Brown was complying with the officer’s commands, his hands were up in an “I surrender” gesture and was shot in the back. Others stated that Brown attacked the officer, and the officer was defending himself when he shot Brown. “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” and “Black Lives Matter” were chanted during the rioting. The Department of Justice found that the Ferguson Police Department was fraught with racism, which caused the police chief to resign.
