On September 11, 2001, America suffered its worst terrorist attack in history. On that day four planes were hijacked in mid air. Two planes hit the World Trade Center, one plane hit the U.S Pentagon, and the final plane was suspected to hit the White House, but the passengers took over the plane and crashed on a field in Pennsylvania. George W. Bush was the President of the United States at the time and knew there needed to be a change in security. The Department of Homeland Security was established on November 25, 2002 after George W. Bush signed the Homeland Security Act of 2002 which created a federal department in the U.S that oversees security on the ground and in the air. To protect the United States the government established the Border and Transportation Security division. The Border and Transportation Security division is responsible for protecting our borders from the illegal movement of drugs, weapons, and immigrants trying to cross the border illegally, while at the same time encouraging legal entry and exit in and out of the United States. Border security has strengthened a lot over the past decade. In order to keep our borders safe, the DHS has invested more in using radars, stronger sensors that can detect from farther away, and also have aerial assets which means that they have more helicopters and more eyes on the sky to insure that no one passess the border illegally. The DHS is also responsible for transportation security which involves securing the flow of people and goods along the nation’s highways, railways, airways, and waterways. The DHS has created agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to promote safety.
