The Department of Defense(DOD) for the United States, founded in 1947, is the largest national employer. The department employing 1.3 million service members and seven hundred forty-two thousand civilian employees (USDoD). Currently in charge of the department is Secretory James Mettis. Their mission statement is located on the website, “Provide military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of the country.” (USDoD). They work to fulfill their mission statement with nearly six hundred billion dollars spent in the year 2015 (NationalProities). That money going to war spending, nuclear weapon spending, international military assistance, and other Pentagon related spending.
