An idiom comes to mind, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, and over time, the memory of this sketch cemented my interest in dentistry. By the time I had completed the drawing, my ingrained curiosity and unease turned into a “what if” moment when I pondered on how and if I could turn those toothless grins into toothy realities.

I am cognizant of the fact that learning is not only textual but also involves collective experience and thorough investigation. In the role of president in the student-run Department of Integrative Biology Students, I learned that leadership is a connecting act: employing a team-player mindset and guiding the club to be the bridge between students and department, like the experience I volunteered as a health interpreter as the link between patient and doctor. By joining the Berkeley Pre-Dental Society, I met many members who had no clue how to gain experience in the dental field. I helped them by running many community service sessions and sourcing internship positions with dentists to stay connected with the society’s stated goals. Seeking more involvement beyond the textbook setting, I joined a research cohort investigating dental morphologies and their impact from an anthropological standpoint. The research taught me to view teeth under a different lens and draw conclusions that were far from conventional. These pro-active activities have honed my teamwork, leadership and research skills so that I can envisage executing my tasks as a dentist for the betterment of all, within certain

From the expanding of my horizons of career choices within the VCU and more in depth into the School of dentistry, it has left me wondering more about if dentistry is just diving into someones mouth looking for a cavity or if there is more science behind it. To be specific there are questions that are left unanswered in my mind like what are the reactions and the perfect environment/circumstances for a tooth to form, grow, operate, and thrive within the mouth. So being apart of the program can greatly benefit my knowledge in…

Communities, especially in dental shortage areas, can force change by demanding access to quality oral health care. But, according to Zarkowski, a potential barrier to change could be the dental hygiene community, if faculty and leaders are indifferent to a new vision or fear change and risk-taking. Other potential barriers might be the difficulties associated with the licensure and certification of the professionals created by transformation.” (HRSA, 2014, pg.…

Dentists have the power to evoke similar feelings in the community that they serve. I elicited such feelings when I helped assemble and deliver lunches to the homeless with Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. Seeing the reactions of these people after handing them a simple sandwich made me realize how greatly some people have to struggle to attain things that most take for granted. The warmth radiating from their eyes, their simple “thank-yous,” and contagious hopeful smiles filled me with a sense of indescribable joy. This moment made me understand the magnitude of impact that I could have on an underprivileged community as a…
