In today’s society, many successful individuals dispersed among all branches of the working class may consider themselves to be professionals working within their niche profession. Identifying as a professional instills a deep notion of trust, sturdy moral and ethical standards, as well as selflessness behavior within a social context in the eyes of the public. However, ever more people utilize this label to simply define an individual, group or organization that has treated them fairly and respectively, and thus the true significance of this designation will continue to diminish.1 Dentistry, among many other lines of work, is generally accepted to fulfil the core definition of a profession. A professional has been previously defined as a person who gets paid to perform a service, for which he or she received the required training and been “initiated or ordained into the fellowship or guild that holds an exclusive monopoly on the particular line of work,” in exchange for monetary compensation.1 Professionals are generally thought to put the benefit of others before any personal gain. A profession is generally identified as fulfilling the majority of a predefined set of hallmarks, including “a skill based on theoretical knowledge obtained through extended and standardized education, demonstrated competence, high level of organization, codification of behavior and altruism,” among many others.1 With the general trust of the public on the promise of altruism, they enter into an agreement with the profession, providing to it a higher standard of living with high incomes and prestige, while the public benefits from necessary care.1 Most published work on the definition of professionalism are opinion based, setting the stage for many conflicting
