4. Think about a time when you were not ready to listen to something or someone (perhaps you thought the lecture would be boring or that the movie/play would be dumb). However, the speaker (player/actors) gained and held your attention. What techniques were used to "pull you in" and "hold your attention" throughout? What SPECIFIC techniques made the experience memorable and enjoyable? Which of these techniques might you be able to apply in your next speech?

I attended a work convention about 6 months ago, our whole dental team was required to listen about ways to improve our team building skills. Of course I was not thrilled about these presentations that we had to listen to and was planning all the ways I could get away with occupying my next few hours another way. There was a speaker who went first that really did a great job expressing the importance of putting aside our differences, because patients are very aware of personal issues that may be going on between staff members. I always try to stay professional and not let others I work with get under my skin because I want to give my patients the best patient care, but there are moments when my boss can be very trying and unprofessional. Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

How many public speeches have you heard? Since I was a kid, I have been a fan of great public figures making historical speeches, especially during a time of crisis. Notably, one of my favorite public speeches was given on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., entitled, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”, which was the very last speech he gave and is considered an iconic moment in American history. Keep in mind, Dr. King was assassinated the following day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, motivated individuals and intensified their passion and hope for equality, in a room full of disadvantage African-Americans.…

Firstly was my organization, but mainly my introduction and main points. Both of these had all aspects covered and were easy to notice during the speech. Secondly I thought I did very well with my volume, rate, and vocal variety. These verbal delivery attributes came off very well in my speech and I was very happy to see that I could still execute these aspects.…

The presentation I attended was about Sustaining Native American Wabanaki Basket-Making Traditions by Dr. Darren Ranco. He actually experienced the basket making in native America, which is why he chose to speak about it. Based on his presentation, his intended audience was probably most anyone. He stated in his speech that it could be for anyone just a little interested to give it a try to look into it. To begin, the speech started off very well, he did not show all of the parts needed for a speech.…

A common way to entice the audience’s attention is by asking rhetorical question. Rhetorical question is a question asked to create a dramatic vibe or to make a point whereas to get an answer. For example, speakers can say “ why is google is so innovative? , “ Why bill gates has the highest net worth in the world?” and others. Additionally, on presentation speakers need to make a starling assertion by saying “Don’t you know that every year, people with visual impairment is caused by playing computer”.…

One of thing things A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking talks about that I want to draw from going forward is forming a specific speech purpose. “Ask yourself: What do you want the audience to learn/do/reconsider/agree with?” (Page 50). This is an idea that I want to keep in mind a lot more before I start writing my speeches. By being able to pinpoint my intentions I believe I will be more effective in making audience laugh or making them consider a certain idea, etc.…

What initially stimulated my interest in the field of dental hygiene was doing a research project on the occupation of a dental hygienist while I was in high school. From doing the project, I learned the tasks, years of education, hours, and salary of a dental hygienist which further intrigued my interest in the field. When I was younger, I had braces and learned that I would need jaw surgery, which made me more curious about the dental field. The more research and experiences I encountered in this field, the more I knew I wanted to be a dental hygienist. My desire to be a dental hygienist has increased as I’ve participated with professionals and observed a broad range of procedures.…
