My ambition to become a dentist and practice in underserved community clinics comes from my experiences living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. My hometown, Los Fresnos, is between two of the poorest cities in America - Brownsville and Harlingen. Some areas of Los Fresnos have more than 90% of families living below the poverty line with average household incomes below $15,000. Many who live near the poverty line rely on inexpensive or government clinics to receive health care. As a resident of this town, I have been a part of these statistics, as well as my friends, family, and the students I work with.…
One of the most remarkable volunteer experiences that I have ever had a chance to participate in was a PULSE program held by Cooper Medical School. This premedical summer program was crucial to my understanding of human health and it afforded me with a totally new perspective on my future career as a physician: a desire to practice in an underserved area because I had a chance to witness the degree to which some citizens are in need of proper medical care and yet most of them have nowhere to go due to the lack of primary care offices in the area. PULSE program was concentrated on service learning as one of the primordial sources in understanding the community in which Cooper Medical School is located and the health trends of its residents. This information could be of much value for physicians who practice in the area because it allows…
1. How will you contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program in providing care to underserved communities? Health illiteracy and lack of healthcare access in low income areas are well documented by my studies. This population is also known to have many comorbidities and a shortage of primary care providers. I want to make a difference in low income communities because they are underserved and improvised.…
Curriculum Description Physicians are the leaders of healthcare teams and provide care to increase patient’s wellness. However, few have training in the complexity of health disparities that impact the patients they may treat. Therefore, the charge to create creating comprehensive training programs suited for diverse physician learners goes to academic medical centers. Mayo Clinic is poised to provide a comprehensive health disparities training for the next generation of physicians. The training uses a focuses on the growing diversity of patients while using a competency driven approach centered on IOM six requirements of care, the Triple Aim, the spirit of the competencies of the American Board of Medical Specialties and the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Kelly Report on Health Disparities in America.…
Dentists have the power to evoke similar feelings in the community that they serve. I elicited such feelings when I helped assemble and deliver lunches to the homeless with Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. Seeing the reactions of these people after handing them a simple sandwich made me realize how greatly some people have to struggle to attain things that most take for granted. The warmth radiating from their eyes, their simple “thank-yous,” and contagious hopeful smiles filled me with a sense of indescribable joy. This moment made me understand the magnitude of impact that I could have on an underprivileged community as a…
Within the similar themes in the assigned article and ebook: Is the key strategies advocated is that health care disparities are ongoing change and battle. Prior to my experience in the Columbia University Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP), I simply wanted to “help people”. This broad and shallow reason for my pursuit of a medical degree has since been redefined. My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). During the SPHSP the program exposed us to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to unique way help people.…
My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship.…
In order to address education and healthcare disparities a similar approach is needed. Underserved U.S. high schools need precollege programs to support their students through their high school and college career, especially for students who intend to work as healthcare professionals. This program is a school organization in underserved high schools where students meet once or twice a week. It will consist of high schools students from each grade with plans to work in the healthcare field. At the meetings there will be advisors, tutors, and even college students that can give advice to the students and help them with their school work.…
This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. Each and every one of my goals were met through my time there.…
As a Nurse there are several ways to address social determinants of health and contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship, which is; “…to improve health and achieve health equality through access to quality service, a skilled health workforce and innovative programs”. My contribution to this mission will be directly through a high level of patient care and indirectly by supporting organizations or coalitions that not only provide care to the medically underserved, but also, support policies which support underserved communities. The dedication of my time in a community with a critical shortage of nurses, as well as, focusing on care for those who are underserved is my primary contribution to the Nurse Corps mission. Patient care…
Have you lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically underserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged? My family immigrated to the United States when I was five years old. We are originally from a rural town in India where people do not have access to adequate healthcare services. Poverty continues to prevail in these communities, and children often do not have the financial resources to pursue higher education.…
I am a knowledgeable and empathetic person and I have always been interested in working in the healthcare field. I am passionate about helping others and particularly enjoy the immediate and rewarding results that dentistry provides. I am determined to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences here at UW Parkside and go on to untimely earn my doctoral degree in dentistry with a goal of working within my community to serve others. Throughout the last 6 years I have been consistently working in the dental field as a dental assistant with many demanding responsibilities.…
A possible cause of this problem is healthcare has ties to social injustices, opportunities, quality of life to our patients and our communities. Health and health care disparities can be described as the differences which cannot be explained by variety in health care needs, patient preferences, or treatment recommendations. Articles reviewed…
I was expecting at least a 2.25 GPA for the 2017 Spring semester, and at least a 2.03 cumulative GPA. However, unexpected thing happened. One year ago, I had a few bad teeth and I got some fillings to fix them. Since then, I begin to have extremely sensitive teeth. Although I have sensitive teeth, they are not affecting my academic performance.…
