In 2013 The New York State Dental Journal published an article comparing and reviewing the oral hygiene between smokers and non smokers with periodontitis. The article also suggests that smoking and periodontitis are directly linked. (Gene B. Sherwim, 2013). A study on the relationship between Smoking and Periodontal disease states that periodontal diseases and smoking are in direct correlation to one another. (Gene B. Sherwim, 2013). Evidence from a 2010 study states that smoking cigarettes is recognized as the most important environmental risk factor in periodontitis. (Liran Levin, 2010).
