Generally, the dangers of dental implant infections are fairly low. They can usually be treated fairly quickly and without any major complication. However, they can cause bone loss in your gums (if the infection spreads there) and can even ruin your implant. Often, the area around the implant gets so infected that it must be removed and replaced.

These dangers are only increased if you have diabetes or if you regularly smoke. However, poor oral health and heart disease have been linked numerous times, including infections in your mouth. People with poor oral health have an increased risk of suffering from severe heart disease, so any infection needs to be treated as soon as possible.
