Pain and discomfort should not be a part of the job description for dental hygienists. However, according to Sanders and Turcotte (1997), there is a “high incidence of cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) among dental hygienists and an alarming number of dental professionals who report work with pain every day” (p.55).
