Dental Hygiene A career in Dental Hygiene requires an associate’s degree, demands a detail oriented, people person, and offers great employee benefits. Alfred Civilion Fones (1869 – March 15, 1938) was from Bridgeport, Connecticut and he was an American dentist who has been known as the founder of the Dental Hygiene profession, starting in 1906. Alfred also trained Irene Newman to be his assistant to perform procedures on their patients. Alfred was concerned about the number of patients losing their teeth and he was convinced that removing plaque and sugar substances could reduce or prevent tooth loss. A typical day as a Dental Hygienist would involve removing tar, stains, and plaque from teeth. They take and develop dental x rays, keep track of patient care and treatment plans. Two-year degree programs are available at community colleges or dental schools. A bachelor’s or master’s degree would be required for researching or teaching in public health programs. A person going into a Dental Hygienist field will need to take preparatory classes such as Biology, Chemistry, and different levels of Math. There are no requirements such as age, physical or psychological. Dental Hygienists are required in every state to be licensed and in most states a Dental Hygienist will have to have a passing grade on written and practical examinations.
