I started our seminar with an introduction of our topic and the journal. I then proceeded with what I thought of the article. I shared my impression on some of the things I find noteworthy and asked my peers if they share the same sentiment with me or if they feel otherwise. I did encourage my colleagues to also share what jumped out to them while reading the article.
During our discussion and as their facilitator, I made sure to listen to my classmates and formed follow-up question so we could keep our dialogue going and I could initiate a deeper conversation. In this aspect, I am happy that I achieved my goal to create a safe environment for everyone. As a matter of fact, even if there were opinions raised that were at variance with the rest of the group, everyone was respectful. One thing I will do next time, though, when I find myself facilitating a group seminar again is to summarize important points that raised during the discussion before wrapping things up. I didn’t do this in the seminar today, so our conversation veered off topic. Mrs. Mackinnon, our advisor, gently pointed this out and asked what would be a better indicator to know that the seminar is wrapping up.
