Scopes of practice are distinct procedures for dental assistants, dental hygienists and dentists that can and cannot be done based on their education and training. The top goal of scope of practice is to protect the patient. It is important for the dental team to know their individual scope of practice; because they can be held legally responsible for performing procedures that they are not educated, trained, and/or licensed to do so. A person’s scope of practice can change throughout their career if they get further training and development. As a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia and ADHA member, I have the right to express my opinion and support unsettled legislation. Moreover, I can contact my Senator or Delegate and provide the information needed to persuade them to support a particular issue before the legislature takes action on it. In addition, becoming a member of VDHA and paying my membership fees, volunteering at dental health fair, and supporting community based programs will all help reach these goals. When taking this course, I went into it already pretty confident in the idea that I was going to become a Dental Hygienist. The basic nature of the job is to primarily clean the teeth of a patient, observe the gums, report and record any abnormalities, and also teach the individual how they can further improve their oral hygiene. Hygienists can also be trained to use tools such as X-ray machines, rotary instruments to clean the teeth and according to the information provided by College ToolKit, depending on the state they are in, they can also administer anesthetics place and carve filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings; remove sutures in the mouth. I have had the profession of being a dental hygienist picked out since freshman year. Recently I have explored colleges that offering the right type of schooling and narrowed it down to two. Ferris State University is one of them, and Grand Rapids Community College is the other. The reason I choose Ferris is because the wait to enter into the dental program at GRCC is a minimum of 2 years.
