Being self-motivated, I worked hard all first semester taking the prerequisites for the Dental Hygiene Program and earned grades that would give me the best chance of getting in.Through my academic excellence, I hope to show the determination and work effort I am capable of. I knew I wanted to get into this program, therefore I completed my job shadowing and volunteer hours the summer after I graduated high school. Getting a step ahead would prepare me to turn in the application this year. In high school, I was certain that I wanted to go into the medical field in my future. Having my mind made up on what area of study I wanted to pursue, I took medical terminology, human relations, introduction to psychology, public speaking, Composition I and II, and the Emergency Medical Technician course through North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa. I was fortunate to take college classes while still in high school to help prepare me for college and work toward my future career. I thought that all of these courses would benefit me in becoming a successful professional in the medical field some day. I was an athlete in many sports throughout my high school career and like to keep in shape. The experiences of this course taught me to be professional and I believe many of the tasks and skills I learned would be applied to being a dental hygienist. I learned how to deal with difficult situations in a timely manner. You have to work fast in a critical situation. One encounter in the medical field that has assured me of my comfortability with patients was my experiences throughout the EMT class. Taking this course proved that I am separate from others in being able to care for people and be in their personal space. Not everyone is comfortable with that, and being a dental hygienist requires you to be outgoing. As mentioned previously, my job shadow experiences and volunteer opportunities assured me that I am capable of becoming a dental hygienist. Witnessing many examinations of a patients ranging from people with almost perfect teeth, to people with gum disease and higher level of plaque and calculus, confirmed my belief that this is a suitable career choice for
