There are a lot of things in the world that can harm our dental health, especially now with so much of our food and drinks being processed and filled with artificial ingredients instead of natural or organic. The more unnatural a food is, in most instances, the more unhealthy it is. One thing that has been causing to our dental health for years, rather it is natural or artificial, are illegal substances such as heroin, cocaine, meth, and cannabis. We released an article earlier about the effects that smoking and/or chewing tobacco can have on our teeth, now to move onto substances that can have an even more severe effect on them.

Meth: Arguably the worst drug on the market, all you have to do to understand how dangerous meth can be is to simply look at the ingredients. People use ingredients like lithium, which as you are most likely aware, is used in batteries, and Acetone, which is found in nail polish remover and paint thinners. It is even possible to find people putting things like lighter fluid and antifreeze into their meth.

With such dangerous ingredients in it, it is easy to imagine how damaging it can be to your health in general, not just your teeth. Meth addiction rapidly destroys your teeth. Tooth decay caused by meth use is not like your normal tooth decay, rather it happens at an accelerated pace, and causes a substantial amount of damage not just to your teeth, but to the nerves as well.

Cocaine: A substance extracted from the lead of the Erythroxylon coca bush, cocaine is a potent, addictive drug that mainly affects the user's brain. Cocaine can be taken in various forms, one that is most commonly ingested by snorting it through the nose, and the other is mixed with chemicals, and then heated up so that it can be ingested in a way similar to smoking tobacco or

Heroin can be ingested in multiple ways. Like many drugs it can be taken in a smoke like form, or snorted like cocaine. A popular method of taking heroin is by shooting it directly into the body using a syringe. Heroin is generally one of the more addictive drugs on the market, and one of the harder drugs to quit.

Much like cocaine, heroin causes dry mouth, reducing the amount of saliva the mouth produces to wash away harmful bacteria. It also causes periodontitis, which is an inflammation of the tissues around the teeth that can shrink gums and loosen teeth.

Cannabis: Pretty much everyone knows about cannabis, also known as “pot” and “marijuana”. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of people that want cannabis legalized for both medical and recreational reasons.
