Domestic Violence affects all races, ethnic groups, religious communities, socioeconomic groups, and educational backgrounds. Give Back a Smile is a nonprofit group I just found out about. What they do is wonderful and pretty important! They mission for the Give Back a Smile program is to "restore a life by restoring a smile". What they do is provide free cosmetic dental care to victims of domestic violence. This program is sponsored by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and has about 7,000 members. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry was founded in 1984 and has been giving back to society since. They provide this service because they understand the poor self-esteem that is part of being a domestic abuse survivor. Often people are left with permanent damage that is a daily reminder of the abuse they suffered. The services included are teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and natural colors restorations. They also share statistics and trends they come across while treating these survivors. Being confident to smile can be an amazing feeling for someone who hasn't had a reason to smile! In order to participate in this program you have to do the following: 1.Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries from abuse from an intimate partner or spouse can contact Give Back A Smile at: 1-800-773-4227. 2.Then survivors must meet with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker or therapist to complete the advocate section of the application. 3.Give Back A Smile will review the application and the dentist will have the final say as to the eligibility of the applicant. 4.If someone is eligible the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry will connect the survivor with a local Give Back A Smile volunteer who provides treatment at no cost.
