Density of Sand The objective of this lab is to use knowledge from previous labs, like the density of water and solids lab, and apply it to find the density of sand. First you must weigh your graduated cylinder, and record the weight, then pour in whatever amount of sand you choose. You then must weigh that to find the mass, and subtract whatever you got by the mass of the graduated cylinder. After that you pour in some water, and find the difference of how much the water went up and, what the level of sand was at before you added the water. Lastly you use the density formula, which is d=m/v, to find the density of the sand. The weight of the graduated cylinder was 40.325g. After adding in the sand it came out to 55.854g, then after subtracting the mass of the graduated cylinder the total mass of the sand came out to, 15.529g. The volume of the water came out to 6mL after adding 10mL of water and assessing the water displacement. Then using the density formula, (d=m/v, d=15.529/6), the density came out to 2.588g/mL. …show more content…
You learn this information by finding the mass and volume of the sand and using a specific formula to find the density. This is relevant to the purpose of the lab because, the lab is meant to teach you how to find the density of any given substance. You also learn how to construct your own lab to complete the task given to you. This is done by applying prior skills and smarts. Also, because this lab is relatively easy, it gives you a good chance to work on your organization of notes, and graphing techniques. This is done by taking your time and taking good, detailed notes.     During this lab, my main goal was to discover exactly how much phosphorus (or phosphate) is in the composition of plant food, or in the case of the Guided Inquiry portion of the lab, in two different brands of plant food.
