Dennis Prager What Makes People Good Or Bad

Decent Essays
We are born a blank slate, our experiences shape us into the people we are today, no one is good or bad. However, we have to ask the question; what qualifies as good or bad? Is a person good if they once sole something as a kid? Is a person bad if they seek redemption? Should we consider the intentions of people? What if the person is mentally ill and their sickness is to blame for their actions? There are so many variables that factor into the character of someone that good and bad becomes nothing more than a matter of opinion. Furthermore, no one is entirely one thing or the other, everyone has done bad things in their life, and everyone has done good things. However, I also despise the article written by Dennis Prager, he's simply labeling

The documentary titled “Pleasure Unwoven: A Personal Journey About Addiction” was an interesting look at the theories behind addiction that classify addiction as a disease and the previous theories that discredited addiction as a disease. One part of the documentary that I learned the most from was the part that discussed the “choice argument” for addiction. Another part of the documentary that I learned a lot from was their discussion of the biological aspect of addiction and addictions effect on a human’s midbrain. Overall, I found this documentary very informative and can see myself utilizing the information I learned in my future career path.…

The article “Good people do Bad Things” was written by Anne Trafton. This article explains that people don’t always act rationally when they’re in group settings rather than alone. Anne emphasizes that the brain acts differently because it is stuck in a “mob mentality”. She started studying this affect after she found herself on the other side of a hostile situation versus a large crowd. The author’s strategies are very effective as far as I can see; most all theories are backed by facts and statistics.…

Philip Zimbardo’s TEDTalk “The Psychology of Evil” discusses the line that separates good from evil, and how any human, placed under the right circumstances, can be swayed to either side of that line. Zimbardo begins his talk by discussing the century old question “What makes people go wrong?”. While some people may argue that humans are born either intrinsically good or evil, Zimbardo refutes this claim stating how, as a young boy growing up in the Bronx, he personally witnessed many of his friends cross the line from good to evil. Zimbardo calls this phenomenon the “Lucifer Effect” after the biblical story of the fallen angel Lucifer, once God’s favorite angel who falls from grace to eventually become Satan, epitome of all evil. Zimbardo’s…

Humans were created to do good and given the ability to reason right from wrong. The gift of our conscience is a beautiful thing. It is unfortunate that in our world many humans fail to love and fall victim to the many evils of this life. I believe that humans are bad because they are motivated by power and thus they become blood thirsty to acquire and retain it. William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies shows that humans are malicious through the murder of Simon (pg. 202).…

Good or Evil Do you think people are good at heart? Anne Frank did. Despite going in hiding for two and a half years and being placed into a concentration camp, she still believed people deserved forgiveness because everyone was kind at heart. Everyone, from terrorists to ISIS, from businessmen to teachers, they all posses some sliver of decency in their souls. No matter what a person does, deep down everyone is still respectable at heart; this is clearly shown by Anne’s life, society as a whole, and what we read in the bible.…

“Truly evil people don’t just hurt others. They take pride in the pain they cause and then try to blame their victims.” Are people evil or are their decisions evil? A question that we all heavily debate on. “He’s not truly guilty he just made a mistake.” Think about it though; in order for a person to do something evil they would first have to have evil intentions.…

“Human Nature is the only science of man; and yet has been hitherto the most neglected.” , said David Hume's, a Scottish philosopher in the 1700’s. Hume’s observation remains significantly relevant to this day. Since the dawn of time, the question of the true nature of the entirety of humanity has always lingered, though left unanswered to this day. Within each human being lies a “moral compass” in which as we grow and learn, we begin to develop a nature which can either sway toward the good or evil side of the spectrum. As humans we are able to recognise almost instantly whether or not a fellow human has committed a “good” or “evil” action for the reason that our brains are wired with various chemicals to recognise the virtues and assets…

I always believed that the good came to the good people and the bad came to the bad ones. This is also why I believe it to be so much harder for a good person to come out of a bad place and lifestyle. This was the reason that those born into a bad home and those born into a bad family had it so much harder, they not only have to escape a life that they’ve lived for years but they also have to battle the bad that is around them. In their family, friends, environment, wherever it may be. I am finally finished getting ready for school although I spent most of it theorizing when I should have been shampooing.…

Some people can be born evil, and some people can develop evil traits as they get older. Humans are not evil nor good. Humans are just human, and the only reason for them to become evil, is if the environment they are surrounded by, encourages bad behaviors. Many wonder what is the root of all evil and most conclude that people are simply innately evil or have a darkness in them that is waiting to show itself. The topic of evil and where it really comes from has caused a debate among many people who take a variety of stances. One such person, William Golding, writes a novel called Lord of the Flies to display his position on the topic of evil. Through his character’s in Lord of the Flies, Golding conveys his opinion that humans are born with natural evil intent which will manifest from lack of society, however, evidence that people are born with a moral compass, that they do what they think is right, along with the constant appearance of heroes in society, prove that people are not inherently evil.…
