Denise Zuniga Interview

First impressions are paramount. They make or break the basic notions you conceive of a person's character. That is the moment when you decide whether you can either be this persons friend, tolerate them, or simply loathe them. Frankly, it is a million times easier to just ignore them and keep to yourself, although this note taking exercise has expanded my curiosity. Never have I ever taken the chance to get to know anyone from my classes as a first year college student, but Professor Straus made that a possibility. Learning basic facts about each student, including Professor Straus's talent as a drummer has arose my interests to learn more. One person who caught my attention was Denise Zuniga. She spoke about her nationality and how she is from Mexican ancestry. It is always interesting to find out about a person's background because it makes me wonder if her Hispanic roots are something she personally identifies herself with? Is she a proud Mexican? Does she follow the culture herself or maybe her family does? It's all a mystery which I personally question and want to know more about. Denise also mentioned that her major is mechanical engineering. Honestly, how fascinating is that? That is such a demanding and rigorous major to take on, I give her props on her …show more content…
His unique background as being part Puerto Rican and Portuguese interested me by the fact that he is mixed and so am I. I would like to know how being mixed has affected him throughout his life. Also, if being mixed has brought him a lot of questioning? As an example, physically. In my experience, I am often either mistaken for being Mexican or just simply of Asian descent. It makes me wonder if people are able to guess Aaron's nationality correctly. I personally have a fascination towards different cultures and would love to know Aaron's opinion on the different cultures he is from. Also, if he has had the chance to visit each

The overall rhetorical situation discussed in the special event "Question Bridge: Black Males" was the problems associated in the young black male communities and how certain scenarios are not that different, racial wise. This does sound broad, but it does fit the topic appropriately since the volunteers associated with the documentary touched on a lot of topics pertaining to young black male communities like finding that special someone, discussing how drugs and smoking is viewed as, generations begin to differ in appeals, etc. One of the questions brought up in the documentary was "In this era, in this society, do you consider yourself to be free as a human being?" A very interesting question since there will be many appeals towards it;…

Nina Jablonski's in her TED talk about race eloquently explained the differences in human skin color. For many centuries, the color of the human skin was the one feature determining the value of a person. For years, people suffered, forcibly removed from their homes, families and everything they knew and loved, and were sold as objects into slavery. They dehumanized, stripped of their rights, dignity, beaten, abused, and killed, simply because their skin was dark. Slavery might be the thing of the past, but its echo reverberates in or society to this day.…

For my community event I went to the Romero Theater Troupe’s presentation of Thoughts on Regime Change & Other Acts of Resistance at Regis University on February 25th. This event was heavily focused on immigration and included actual stories from immigrants and their families as well as other stories that discussed critical issues in our society today. From this event I feel like I learned a ton about how immigration can affect families and how hard it can be to come to this country. Many of the stories were something that I could never relate to due to my own circumstances so it was very interesting to be able to see how people feel and how they are treated as immigrants. I feel like I really learned a lot from the Lopez family’s performance…

Summer Slininger Latino: The Changing Face of America is a documentary that dives deep into the fact that in the future the United States will face a demographic shift and Latinos will become the largest demographic group. Roxane Frias created this documentary to inform people about how the Latino population will begin to have a large influence on the United Sates future within politics and communities. This movie was an eye opener for me, as before watching this film I was oblivious to many of the facts that were spread throughout the film. When the film began to talk about how the presidential candidates need to receive the Latino vote in order to win presidency, I was a little weary on that fact.…

When it comes to diversity, I like to define it as being different from others, having or being composed of different elements. What makes you different from others is a good way I like to think of diversity. Going on into intersectionality, I feel that in the book, Patricia Hill Collins goes into depth about intersectionality and how everyone has multiple group memberships that can crisscross or create different realities for people. How our lives can be intersected with other individuals, based on their genders, classes, and sexual orientations. When going back to my Identity Metaphor assignment awhile back, I talked about how I see myself as a washing machine, while I may be passive on the outside, my mind is always moving in the inside.…

Personal Connections with Chicano Films Chicano films tell stories that explore many topics and issues that mainly pertain to the experience of being a Mexican- American in the United States. However, many Americans of Hispanic descent, whether they are first generation Hispanic- American or even third generation, can identify with many of the themes, topics, and issues seen in these films. Throughout this course, I have watched a number of films that deal with serious, shocking, saddening, irritating, touching, and even joyful themes that have very much made me reflect on my experience growing up in the U.S. as a Guatemalan- American with two immigrant parents. The two films that I related to the most would have to be El Norte and Mi Familia/ My Family; due to the way they explore the issues of the reality of immigration, difficulty in achieving the American dream, the prevalence of immigrants in U.S. labor market, and cultural identity.…

As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…
