Dene Hospital Reflection

Staff within mental health settings have a responsibility to maintain high standards when working in adherence with hospital policies. All stakeholders involved in patient care are responsible for ensuring compliance with Health and Safety areas, of which include Safeguarding, Equality; Diversity; Inclusion; Concerns and complaints; Data protection; Confidentiality. Such frameworks are in place to ensure that staff successfully protect and advocate for vulnerable individuals who are at risk of harm, exclusion, and exploitation. The following is a reflection of my experience working at the Dene hospital.

This paper aims to examine the National Health Service (NHS) Diabetes’ document Commissioning Mental Health and Diabetes Services (Swage, 2011). This will be followed by a critique of its relevance and efficiency as a public health policy. A mention will be made on its implementation and influence on mental health services and their nurses in the United Kingdom (UK). Firstly, however, it is important to establish why diabetes is considered a public health issue and why an awareness of this condition is relevant to mental health services.…

According to Universal Health Services (2016), in order to provide safe and quality care, we adhere to the following principles: continuous improvement in measurable ways, employee development, ethical and fair treatment of all, and teamwork. Respectively, these principles can also be found in the ICN Code of Ethics. According to the International Council of Nurses (2012) nurses must develop and continuously monitor a work setting that promotes quality care, establish systems of professional appraisal and continuing education, provide care that respects the dignity and human rights of all, and create a workplace that supports the common professional ethical values of every member of the treatment…

Code Blue-Where To? This is a review of the case study Code Blue-Where To?, The patient in this case is an 80 year old patient admitted to a psychiatric facility, who ultimately dies. His death is not the fault of the medical staff, but the care he received prior to his death was plagued with system errors and communication breakdowns that could be argued as causing undue patient harm. The errors include problems with staff training, policy and procedures, outdated equipment, and failure to follow protocol.…

As part of their duty they should also raise any concerns they may have if they think an individual's care, dignity or safety is at any harm. This is known as ‘whistleblowing’. Being trained and knowing how to identify signs of abuse and also knowing the different policies and procedures that are available explaining the actions that should be taken if anything occurs ensures that the chance of abuse actually happening is seriously reduced. For example in George’s case study Mark is a whistleblower, this is because he found George in the condition he was in and took him to the hospital for treatment as well as reporting the…

Anna-Lise, Paven, Rebecca, Christina, and Colton - I appreciate your thoughtful post addressing the key points of the intersectionality paradigm and the long responses that followed. I see the incredible value of this paradigm that addresses the relationships of health disparities in the scope of the dominant culture, wherever the dominant culture is, speaking globally. I especially appreciated the point made by Pavan regarding the role of the NP which I would like to expand to the role of the DNP. Pavan states, “as NPs we consider the influence of the patient’s social determinants of health, environment, biophysical, and psychological factors as equal counterparts to maintaining health and well-being. Further she mentioned Van Herk, Smith,…

The most surprising statistic the author quotes is that suicides are not only 5 times as high as in the general population but that those in jail are 9 times as high. And they occur by more than half in the first 24 hours after arrest and "a significant proportion" within the first few hours. The fear, shock, shame and inability to envision how to cope with it all. Even though newly arrested individuals in some jails are to be screened for potential suicidal actions, if they are placed in isolation cells and not directly visible to guards or others, the guidelines are for the guards to check every 15 minutes.…

Like group work, it enhances social functioning of individuals and in this case the patient in the case study. There are many theoretical assumptions about social case work that are exhibited in this case study, and is effective in the following up on group work and in assessing the practice model (Pamar, 2014). These assumptions include; Individual and society need each other. There are many factors in society, which trigger a person’s mood attitude and behavior (Pamar, 2014).…

Placement. Day 1. I was lucky enough to be assigned to Outpatients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for my placement, being a hospital, I knew that I would be entering an environment with a very large demographic and community. On prior research I found it interesting to find that they care for more than 250,000 patients in primarily Adelaide’s western suburbs. I knew before my placement that this would include many different demographic factors such as, age, religion, sex, and culture.…

The key recommendations stated in the gold standard are to promote good mental health in older people, early detection and diagnosis of depression, promotion of integrated care by health professionals and supporting carers and establishment of specialist mental health teams for older people (Department of Health, 2001). The author thinks that the framework is idealistic, but unachievable in the health and social care system, because up to the present day there are no specialist mental health teams specifically for older people, they are mental health teams that cover a multitude of health specialities giving a once size fits all approach . ( Burns & Warner 2015) The key recommendations stated in this are to promote good mental health in older people by the promoting of early detection and diagnosis of depression and promotion of integrated care by health professionals, supporting carers and establishment of specialist mental health teams for older…
