When Demonstrating Selfless Giving Makes a Difference

Who orders pizza at church? Apparently more people than you might think, since the Domino's driver did not seem very surprised that she was showing up to the Sycamore Creek Church in Pickerington, Ohio, with a hot pie. She also did not seem at all surprised that the pizza was not for a Friday night youth group or Saturday woman's retreat. This hot delivery was scheduled during Holy Spirit prime time, right in the middle of Sunday worship.

The driver, known only as Natasha, was greeted over the PA system when she arrived with her steaming goodness and was asked to come up front to the pulpit. Instead of fearing an odd cult-like demise, Natasha trusted the people of Sycamore Creek Church and stepped up in front of the congregation. She handed the pizza over to Reverend Steve Markle, who gave it a cursory once-over and passed it off to someone behind him. He then asked the driver what the largest tip she ever made was. She told him it was around $10. Markle gave her a $20 and commented to her and the congregation that she had just earned her largest tip, almost $15 on a $6 pizza. When watching the video of the event, posted by USA Today, a viewer might think the pastor was being kind of a jerk. He then taught us why it isn't wise to be too quick to judge.

Restuarants are allowed to pay their tipped employees far less than minimum wage, and as a result, server's income depends mostly, and in some cases entirely, on tips. Many people believe that employers should have to pay tipped employees minimum wage, and there are good arguments on both sides of the issue. It seems strange that a person's paycheck would be dependent on the generosity of the people they serve. Technically tipping is not required, and unless they have worked in a restuarant themselves, people might not realize how important it is to a servers income. Despite this fact, the tradition of tipping is very established, and servers recieve a relatively consistent paycheck.…

Why Tipping Should be Banned Although, Americans have grown accustomed to believing tipping a waiter or a waitress at a restaurant is part of the American dining experience, the fact is, it is a borrowed custom from Europe (Burton). According to Michael Lynn, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “tipping in the United States began just after the American Civil War in the late 1800’s.” The custom was introduced again in the United States when wealthy Americans traveled to Europe, witnessed tipping, and brought the aristocratic custom back to prove their elevated education and class (Burton). History claims that tipping originated in the taverns of 17th century England, where drinkers would slip money to a waiter…
